On December 29, 2013, gay marriage was officially declared legal in Maine. Around the state of Maine, some city halls opened up at midnight on December 28 to sign marriage certificates or perform full ceremonies. One of these city hall’s was Portland, where I grabbed some photos of the big event.

The crowd of over 300 gathered in anticipation of the first gay couples emerging from Portland, Maine city hall at midnight on December 29, 2013.

The air was chilly, but spirits were high as gatherers waited to sing “All you need is Love,” by the Beatles when the first couple emerged from Portland City Hall. Free snacks, flowers, and other gifts were donated and given out to couples and supporters at the event.
